Columbia River Statuettes

My sketch from today’s Astoria Sketching gathering at the Cannery Pier Hotel In Astoria, Oregon. Vast views of the Columbia River west and north of Astoria were available as well as interiors.
The most conspicuous error in the above sketch is the dark buoy in the near center of the image. It was the buoy’s true location but it focuses the eye away from the pilings the true center of interest. One of our group, Noel Thomas, pointed that out and said “Don’t let the scene dictate. Dictate the scene.”

Removing the buoy certainly improves that aspect of the drawing. Thank you, Noel. More contrast in the foreground would help also.

Ship’s Wheel

Survived my first trial of sketching in the wild and the following critique. Spent two hours at the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria with a drawing group. My choice of subject was poor. Poor lighting and kids kept turning the wheel. Wheels shape and angle need work. Have a lot to learn. New location in two weeks. Had fun.
